GATE Preparation: A Realistic Timeline Built Around Previous Papers

GATE rewards accuracy and speed on a fairly predictable set of question types more than raw depth of knowledge. A preparation timeline that puts previous year papers at the centre, rather than the end, tends to outperform a pure syllabus-first approach.

6+ months out: diagnostic pass

Before you plan your syllabus coverage, attempt one full previous year GATE paper for your subject, untimed, open-book. Don't worry about the score — the goal is to see which topics show up repeatedly and which question styles (numerical answer type, multiple select, linked answer) you find hardest. This should shape how you sequence topics, not just what you study.

3-6 months out: topic-wise PYQ sets

As you finish each topic in your core coverage, immediately solve every previous-year GATE question on that topic across the last 8-10 years, sourced together rather than one paper at a time. Getting all the Thermodynamics questions from 10 years in one sitting, for instance, shows you the topic's real question patterns far faster than solving them scattered across separate mock papers.

1-3 months out: full papers, strict timing

Switch to full previous-year papers under real exam timing (3 hours, no breaks). Track two numbers every time: your accuracy on attempted questions, and how many questions you left unattempted due to time. Most GATE aspirants lose more marks to poor time allocation than to not knowing the material — this phase is where you fix that.

Final 2-3 weeks: error-log review only

Stop attempting new papers. Go back through every question you got wrong across all previous attempts and re-solve just those, using AI-generated step-by-step solutions where your own explanation still feels shaky. This is a much better use of the last stretch than fresh full papers, which mostly add fatigue at this point.
